What are some good ways to organize my "stuff"?

Author: admin  |  Category: organize it

I am a pack rat, and I have a lot of stuff I’d like to organize. First of all, I’m going through all my stuff and getting rid of a lot, but how do I organize the rest of it? Things like keepsakes, old notebooks, stuff I’ve written, ornaments, trohpies, etc.

Any tips would be appreciated!!

:)

Most people box up what they absolutely cannot part with, with moth balls, and store in the attic.

You can get some of those plastic bins at the store…they come in all different sizes. You can write on the outside of them w/ a permanent marker and stack them in your basement/storage area/closet. They are better than cardboard boxes b/c they wont damage if water gets to them or grow mold/mildew…plus they are relatively inexpensive ($2-$15).

Many stores now carry really nice storage solutions. You can get cheap but effective items at Walmart, Target, Bed Bath and Beyond or the Container Store.

Plastic 3 drawer units are great for the closet. You can use magazine organizers for notebooks. This time of year you can actually find ornament boxed with little cubbies for each item.

I would recommend getting nice plastic storage tubs and drawer units for your long term storage, it’ll hold up better in a basement or an attic. More attractive decorative boxes would be good for stuff you want to leave somewhere more accessible and you can find them in a variety of materials (wicker, plastic, metal, suede)

Those over the door shoe holders are also really useful for other items.

    1) As you sort, group like things together. Then, you can compare and choose to keep just the best one or two of something.

    2) Be realistic. Do you really need 10 spatulas? Or just your favorite 3? Lose what you don’t use.

    3) There are tons of great storage containers/products out there. Choose the size of the container for a specific type of "stuff" (memorabilia, ornaments, writings) and then stick to the container. Your house doesn’t get bigger as you bring things in!

    4) Make a list of rules for yourself before you look at your things. This keeps the emotion out of it. Example: anything not a size 8 or 10 goes; if I bought it when I was in high school, it goes; if I don’t remember the last time I used it, it goes; if it is something I’m saving for "maybe I’ll use it some day…" then it goes – and so on.

    5) Get help!! Ask someone to help you or hire an organizer. (Yes, we do make house calls!) Another pair of eyes has no emotional attachment and can help you make good decisions.

    Happy Organizing!!

Containers, containers, containers! Find keepsake boxes at your local craft store for the sentimental items. Here are some general organizing tips.

SORT – Starting anywhere – begin to sort – how can you organize what you don’t even know you have?

TOSS – Anything that is obviously trash

ANALYZE– The items that you keep in order to decide how much space will be required.

REMOVE –move each individual item into the room or area that will be its home.

TIME – Figure how much time you can and want to spend on this project today.

HELP – If the job seems to large to tackle at this point – hire a professional

EVALUATE – measure the items that will need containers before shopping

RETRAIN – Retrain yourself to always be aware of that you are piling and stuffing again – remember, you are training others around you by your actions

ENJOY – enjoy your new lifestyle – with more time and freedom!

I admit that the steps above are pretty vague and need to be filled out, but I guarantee that if you only follow them as written you would be well on your way to living an organized life style.. I find that everything is a process and along the way the process changes. As you become more organized you will probably change many of the ideas that you started with. Notice-the key word is START!
