How to organize!

It was a few years back when I decided to get my clutter under control and take charge of my messy home. I had to learn how to organize with no help from anyone. Even as a young man I was a pack rat. My first undertaking in clearing the clutter didn’t end very well as I still had a messy home. I had always believed that everything I had packed away had value and would someday be used for something. Then I began to realize a few important things about getting organized. The first thing I realized is that with all the stuff I had stored I couldn’t remember where anything specifically was. So anything I wanted to use that I already had was lost in the clutter. I wound up having to buy another item I was needing even though I knew I had one somewhere. I also realized if I haven’t used something after a certain amount of time I would probably never need it.

I decided to try to clean the clutter again. This time I attacked it with an intent to get rid of it all! I began by starting with one room at a time. I sorted things to throw away, things to donate, things to sell and things to keep. Then after all was sorted I went back through the keep pile and pulled out anything I didn’t absolutely need. I would return to the keep pile occasionally and remove a few more things not seriously needed. Their where times I wound up getting rid of everything after several returns to the keep pile. Now when I go through things to get rid of I can move through the items quickly and effortlessly getting rid of 90% of everything the first round. I donate most everything to Good Will but save a few higher dollar items to sell. Learnig how to organize was a tough undertaking but in the end it was all worth it.

The biggest thing I have discovered in learning how to organize and getting it done is that as my home became less cluttered my life became easier. As the clutter became organized my mind seemed to also become less cluttered. I began sleeping better and feeling less stressed. I am able to remember things from short term memory again which had become a problem before clearing the clutter. I have realized that cleaning up a messy home not only makes a house more presentable but also has great health benefits both mentally and physically.
